There’s an App For That: Simplify Your Move with Technology

You’ve bought a new house, you have a buyer for the old one, and all your ducks seem to be lining up in a row. Don’t start quacking just yet. You still have to move – a thought you’ve probably pushed out of your mind until this very moment. Visions of cardboard boxes swirl in your head, but moving doesn’t have to be stressful. Technology is a wonderful gift that can be applied to just about any area of your life, including moving. Here are a few apps to help you get that last duck in the right place:

Sortly

You’ve got more packing tape than you know what to do with and you have cardboard boxes ready to go, but before you start packing, download Sortly to help make your move a breeze. Use the app to create a visual inventory of everything you own, add detailed notes, and decide what to keep and what is better off being donated or sold. You can categorize your items by box and location, and use the photo and note feature to take pictures of your items and note their condition to make sure nothing gets damaged during the moving process.

Sortly sounds amazing enough, but the best part has yet to be touched upon – Sortly QR labels. Head to your nearest stationary store and purchase self-adhesive labels (small, medium, or large). Fill out a quick and easy form in the app and print the PDF version of the labels using your printer and the sheet of adhesive labels you just purchased. Stick the label on your box, and link a folder or item entry to the label via the app. Once you arrive at your new home, just scan the box to find out the contents so you can spend less time searching and more time settling in and putting the moving process behind you.

Evernote

How many times have you purchased a fancy new planner to get your life organized, only to misplace the planner and feel completely and totally lost? With Evernote, you can create organized lists, checklists, and to-do lists all on your phone. Take notes in various formats such as text, photos, audio, video, and web clippings. You can even use the app to scan important documents such as lease/mortgage documents, emergency phone numbers, medical records, and receipts.

As you prepare to move, create a “Belpre Move” notebook where you will keep everything related to your move, no matter how small or miniscule. For example, use it to keep track of moving estimates, design ideas, packing checklists, and forms you will have to fill out at the DMV. Evernote is whatever you make of it, so feel free to create whatever notebook your heart desires as long as it will keep you organized and sane.

Rover

In all the chaos of moving, you’ve got to make sure the family dog is taken care of too. Luckily, Rover makes it easy by creating a one-stop shop to meet all your pup’s needs during a big life change such as a move. If your dog is shy, nervous, or aggressive around strangers, consider using doggy daycare to keep him while the movers work to get everything loaded up. Your dog will be out of harm’s way and you won’t have to worry about the stress of the move causing unnecessary anxiety. Depending on how much will be going on throughout moving day, consider hiring a boarder to keep him overnight so he is relaxed and ready to go once the last box is loaded.

The great thing about Rover is that it can be used for small tasks such as dog walking. While you do a quick walk through of the house, let your dog have a walk of his own with a dog walker. You can make sure your pooch has used the bathroom and marked his territory at the fire hydrant on the corner one last time.

With these three apps in your arsenal, you can rest assured that some, if not most, of the stress will be lifted. Remember, moving is a process, so take it one day at time. Snags may arise, but at the end of it all you’ll be in your new home.
